The Legal Clinic team at the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition in Vienna!

We are very pleased to announce that the Legal Clinic Team, consisting of Dorota Piechowiak, Juliana Wiśniewska, and Sonia Mikołajczak, with the support of Adrian Kaczmarek, M.A., Coordinator of the International Section, represented Adam Mickiewicz University for the first time at the 2024 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition – European Rounds. Named after the Polish judge, president of the International Court of Justice, and one of the founders of international space law, the competition is the most prestigious moot court event in the field of space law.

The European Rounds, organized by the European Centre for Space Law at the European Space Agency and the University of Vienna, consisted of four sessions, during which our team represented litigants in a simulated trial before the International Court of Justice, based on a case study in international space law.

While in Vienna, the tournament participants attended a series of lectures organized by the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) and presented by the institute’s leading researchers. The lectures covered topics such as the future of space law, international astropolitics, and the organization’s current achievements in advancing international and national regulations in this field. In addition, thanks to the organizers and, above all, the support of the European Space Agency, the team was given a unique opportunity to observe the proceedings of the 63rd session of the Legal Sub-Committee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. During the session, the students listened to speeches by experts and diplomats from around the world, covering topics such as guidelines for the long-term sustainability of the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.

This remarkable experience provided invaluable knowledge that will certainly be applied in the future—both in next year’s competition and in the development of further research on space law at our university.

We sincerely congratulate all the participants in the competition and encourage students to engage in similar initiatives organized by the Law Clinic of the Faculty of Law at Adam Mickiewicz University in the future.
